SUS News April 21, 2015

Welcome to the 15th edition of the Seattle Urban Squash Newsletter.

March 21, 2015

Dear SUS Supporter,

It’s been a while since our last newsletter, but only because there’s been so much going on that it’s hard to find time to write! We have had a wonderful few months here at Seattle Urban Squash, and now in the heart of our season we are really starting to see our work from earlier in the year pay off. The kids have been diligently practicing their writing, working on everything from journal entries to short stories to book reports to haikus. The results couldn’t be more stunning. This week our 4th and 5th graders had one hour to write a persuasive essay convincing their principal to extend recess. They will be delivering the essays next week, and having read them I honestly won’t be surprised if next year Northgate Elementary gets an extra hour of play time. Most of our students couldn’t even write a paragraph, let alone an essay, before this year, and we couldn’t be prouder of how hard they’ve worked to get where they are now.

Squash-wise, the kids are improving in that really fast way that only young people who get great coaching can. They had a great time at the Stratos Seattle Open hitting with some of the pros who were kind enough to take time away from their match preparations to give some impromptu lessons. We owe a huge thank you to Declan James, Lotte Eriksen, and Harinder Sandhu for generously donating their time and energy to our program. At the very least, they got 12 new hardcore fans out of it! Click here to see some awesome pictures from the tournament.

We have some very fun events coming up where you can help our students and have a blast at the same time! Check out the descriptions below to learn more about our upcoming team tournament, as well as a dance party at Century Ballroom. We’d love to see all of you there! If you can’t attend the events, please consider making a cash donation to Seattle Urban Squash, which will help us meet our operating budget for 2015. We are in an exciting and critical time of growth for our program, and cannot afford to lose momentum. Donations can be made online via PayPal, or by sending a check made out to Seattle Urban Squash to Seattle Urban Squash, 921 N 82nd St., Seattle, WA 98103.

As always, thank you so much for your continued enthusiasm and support. We wouldn’t be here without your amazing generosity.

Have a great spring!

We are Expanding Our Head Coach Position - Thank you Up2Us!

We are pleased to announce that we have received a grant from the Up2Us Coach Across America program to expand our Athletic Director position from half to full time next season. This will give us much more leeway to recruit additional students into the program and improve our overall squash curriculum. Up2Us is an AmeriCorps related organization that provides funding and training to coaches in programs like ours around the country that use sports to help young people reach their full potential in life. Next season will be our second year with the program, and we are very grateful for their vote of confidence in selecting us again. We couldn’t be more excited to continue to work with Up2Us in the coming school year!

SUS at the Stratos Seattle Open

Everyone who saw any of the amazing squash played at the Stratos Seattle Open knows what a special event it was. Our kids had a great time there too and learned a lot! Thank you to everyone who donated and bought raffle tickets at our booth. Check out our Facebook page to see more great pictures from the tournament.
